Default Brominism
The bromide ion is present in Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide. Although it does not contain enough bromide to present a serious risk of brominism, some people may be sensitive to bromide.

Bromide ion ingestion of up to 9 mg/kg/day for up to 12 weeks at a time has not been associated with significant physiological side-effects. As HBr accounts for about 27% of the weight of DXM Hbr, a 60 kg individual would have to take doses of more than 2 grams daily to build up to 9 mg/kg/day of bromide ions. In a study where a man took 1500mg of DXM HBr a week, bromide levels were below toxic levels. [1]

· skin problems (acne)
· metallic taste
· fatigue
· ataxia
· cognitive impairment
· psychosis

[top]Removing Bromide Ions
Removing the source of bromide
The most obvious way to help reduce bromide levels.

Water
Extra water intake can help get rid of bromide as the bromide ion is water soluble. Make sure to replenish electrolytes (sodium and potassium) as well. Distilled water will probably remove more bromide, but it is important to also take a multivitamin and extra electrolytes as distilled water lacks vital minerals.

Salt (Sodium Chloride)
The chloride ion speeds excretion of bromide from the body.[2]

Iodine

Bromide can take the place of the iodide ion in the body (from example in the thyroid). Pulse dosing of iodine may help.

Vitamin C
Taking several grams of vitamin C spread throughout the day may help.

Zinc

Zinc may help with skin symptoms.
