KENNEWICK -- Vicodin, Xanax, and Adderal are all legit prescription drugs that many people use to take care of their health problems.
But more times than we know, those drugs are being abused with tragic results. The prescription drug Adderal is mainly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. The stimulant-type drug is prescribed to millions of young people throughout the country. But more times than you may know, kids are selling these drugs on the black market and starting a drug abuse trend from prescription drugs. Addiction specialist Andrea Ray of Sunderland Family Services say it's increasing every year. "It's become for more prevalent anywhere from 13 to 18...a lot of the young people," said Ray. Ray says more than 90-percent of young people that get hooked on prescription drugs, actually start off abusing other drugs like marijuana, and even alcohol. <span style='colorurple'>"We're also seeing a lot of like I said, over the counter cold medicines and things like Robitussin, things like that," said Ray.</span> Statistics from the center indicate that between 1993 to 2005 students abusing Vicodin went up 343 percent, or more than 240-thousand people. Numbers increase to 450 percent for Xanax and Valium abusers and more than 93 percent for Adderal. And for those that enforce the rules, it's gotten to be a dilemma here. "It's been enough of a problem to where we actualy have an officer that has been specifically trained through the state patrol as a drug recognition expert," said Sgt. Scott Child of the Kennewick Police Department. The prescription drug dilemma got major attention earlier this week with the arrest of Al Gore, III. He is charged with possessing marijuana along with Vicodin, Xanax, Valium, and Adderal. Ray says a bigger problem is kids mixing prescriptions with alcohol. And the result of that can be tragic. Addiction specialists tell us the main reason more young people are using prescription drugs is because it's just easy access. You can find it in the medicine cabinet or just go to the store. They say if you see the signs, especially in kids, tell somebody right away. And the problem isn't just with kids. Ray tells us, that many times, older adults, especially the elderly find themselves prescription drug abusers, as well. http://www.kvewtv.com/news/?sect_rank=1&se...1&story_id=2781 |
