Bill Nelson is in the US Senate. Those who want DXM powder may want to stock up on it.

Online drug purchases not regulated

NBC2 News
Posted on: Wednesday, February 23, 2005

LEE COUNTY Two teens died and one was hospitalized after possibly
overdosing on a form of the drug dextromethorphan, commonly found in
cold medicines. A friend of the teens said they ordered the drug
online. Now Senator Bill Nelson is leading the way trying to make it
more difficult to buy non-prescription drugs online.

Online there are hundreds of websites that sell something many
teenagers think is all the rage. They sell raw forms of ingredients in
over the counter drugs, some intended for lab use.

Although there are warnings, Dr. Jules Preudhomme says the websites
are easily abused.

"I think people on the internet who dispense, internet pharmacies,
should be held responsible," said Preudhomme, board member of the Lee
County Medical Society.

So do many lawmakers. Southwest Florida's Senator Bill Nelson has
requested a meeting with the Drug Enforcement Agency next week after
learning about the deaths of two local teens. He wants it to be more
difficult to purchase drugs online.

"Just a small change, like needing to verify the lab you are ordering
for. Just a small change to prevent this tragic occurrence," said
Nelson.

Some doctors like Preudhomme say any possible solution will come with
arguments. He just hopes those who need drugs for their ailments will
still be able to get them.

"We just need to be careful dispensing these drugs and if they are
going to be available, they should be available to the right people,"
said Preudhomme.

So they used for the symptoms they are meant to treat instead of being
abused.

Just last week, a state senator in California introduced legislation
to make dextromethorphan available only to people over the age of 18.
New York is considering that as well.

I see little wrong with making dxm products available to only those 18 and over.

I see little wrong with making dxm products available to only those 18 and over. But not allowing bulk sales of the cheaper, pure product is bullshit/. Lobbyism at its finest.
Unless a specific *new* law is passed, it will *never* be illegal to order bulk powder DXM for an adult over 18. Remember DXM is *specifically* exempted from scheduling.

I'm not worried and I think rfg is panicing over nothing.

Mental models are fuzzy, incomplete, and imprecisely stated. Furthermore, within a single individual, mental models change with time, even during the flow of a single conversation. The human mind assembles a few relationships to fit the context of a discussion. As debate shifts, so do the mental models. Even when only a single topic is being discussed, each participant in a conversation employs a different mental model to interpret the subject. Fundamental assumptions differ but are never brought into the open. Goals are different but left unstated. It is little wonder that compromise takes so long. And even when consensus is reached, the underlying assumptions may be fallacies that lead to laws and programs that fail. The human mind is not adapted to understanding correctly the consequences implied by a mental model. A mental model may be correct in structure and assumptions but, even so, the human mind--either individually or as a group consensus--is apt to draw the wrong implications for the future.

There should be a test you have to pass to order...Like the safe amounts to take, different safety methods, lifesaving sites such as this one, and whatnot...But america is too critical for any lifesaving tactics like that

Note that Bill Nelson is a US Senator, and in a position to at least propose a new law. It would surprise you that it might be politically popular to restrict sales of DXM powder when it is well known that it is commonly bought by people to use as a powerful psychedelic drug?

A small change. Right.

Just like the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914 was a small recordkeeping change, and the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was a small tax.

Indeed levomethorphan. I think concern is well placed here, but we will see. I keep forgetting the dxm exemption act. I think it has a good 2 years left?

The DXM exemption is not like a "god mode" cheat code. It will not protect DXM from efforts to make it illegal. The only reason it was even put in the CSA is so it wouldn't accidentally be declared a Schedule II substance because it is an optical isomer of levomethorphan, which is a Schedule II substance.

Also, that exemption only applies to the Controlled Substances Act. There is absolutely nothing stopping congressmen from passing a separate law, outside the CSA, that regulates or even bans DXM.

I personally do not think laws against DXM will be successful, but the exemption has no bearing on my opinion.
