The FDA has said it erred Wednesday in posting a warning letter to Procter & Gamble on two of its NyQuil and DayQuil cold products.
The over-the-counter remedies in question include vitamin C along with dextromethorphan, acetaminophen, and decongestant ingredients. The warning letter had chided Procter & Gamble for listing the vitamin as an inactive ingredient on the products' labels.
It also told the company that vitamin C is not on the FDA's list of ingredients that can be combined with the other drugs contained in the NyQuil and DayQuil products.
But shortly after the letter was posted on the agency's website, it was removed.
Today, the FDA said it had been posted by mistake and had not been sent to the company. "The posting occurred due to an internal system error," a statement said.
However, the statement did not indicate whether the agency still had concerns about the inclusion of vitamin C in the products or their labeling.
An FDA spokesman said the agency would have no further comment.
