"Racing Victoria's chief steward Des Gleeson last night issued an urgent warning to all trainers about a "potential time bomb" they could have in their stables.
Gleeson said the stewards had been told by Ranvet, a leading maker of veterinary products in Australia, that three faulty batches of the anti-ulcer medication "Ulcerguard" were in circulation.
He said the faulty batches, produced in 2001 and 2002, had been contaminated by the cough suppressant dextromethorphan hydrobromide, a prohibited substance under the rules of racing.
"It's the sort of thing found in every racing stable," he said.
The contaminated products can be identified by their batch numbers, recorded on the label."
